Dr. Max Vanatta, from the University of Michigan School of Environment and Sustainability, put in context a lot of information swirling around the community concerning the recommissioning of a the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant and possible construction of the first Small Modular Reactor (SMR) power plant in the country when spoke to a packed crowd for the first speaker series event of 11th season. Vanatta questioned the aggressive project time table given the extensive work needed to upgrade the 54 year old plant and the approval process of the Nuclear Regular Commission (NCR). He also felt it would be very difficult to have an SMR plant producing power by the company 2030 target date.
